In the state of South Carolina, individuals age 15 and older may apply for a Class G moped operator’s license by taking a vision and knowledge test at a SCDMV branch.  A skills test is not required for moped applicants.

• A valid driver’s license or moped license to drive a moped is required.
• The moped must be registered and have a license plate.
• Mopeds do not have to carry insurance.

If younger than 16:

• An individual may only operate a moped alone during daylight hours.
• During nighttime hours, individuals may operate a moped with a licensed driver who is 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience. That driver must be a passenger on the moped.

Individuals under the age of 21 must wear a helmet while riding a moped.

In the state of South Carolina, you may purchase a golf cart permit at any SCDMV branch.

• A permit decal must always be visible on the golf cart.
• According to the State Code of Laws, if you have a valid driver’s license, you may drive a golf cart during the day within FOUR miles of your home or business and on secondary highways with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
• Proof of liability insurance is required for golf carts.
• No one under the age of 16 is permitted to drive a golf cart.
• No night driving is allowed.

**For instance, in the Town of Lamar, riding on Main Street where Town Hall is located is permitted because it within the 35 mph limit, however it is NOT permitted to operate a golf cart on Hwy 401 and going on to Davis Street.
