The Town of Lamar stretches 1.2 square miles in Darlington County.
Just a quick hop off I-20, we may seem like a pass-through town… but you will want to stick around and discover our charming little community.
Stroll down Main Street where you will find merchants, home cooking, post office and more. Pop in our Town Hall for official town business and council meetings. There is a hearty welcome for everyone who visits Lamar. We are the kind of place where you don’t meet a stranger and chances are you pass a relative on the road.
In April, we host our annual Egg Scramble Jamboree. Our little town gets all “dressed up” for the festivities with live entertainment, a parade, the Lamar Beauty Pageant, arts and crafts and so much traditional southern food to choose from, you won’t want to leave!
Try our challenging 18-hole Governor’s Run golf course, named for Lamar’s son, former South Carolina Governor David Beasley. Complete with a full service Pro Shop and Bar & Grille, the 7,013 yard Championship Course was rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” Overlooking the 9th green, is the Governor’s Run Banquet Facility, where you may host events with a breathtaking view.
Pay tribute to veterans at the Lamar Veterans Memorial at Parnell Park. A large granite monument inscribed “All Gave Some! Some Gave All!” greets visitors as they enter the wrought iron gate. Brick walls list names of military veterans of all branches of the U.S. military, from the Revolutionary War to the war in Middle East. Bountiful blooms spring to fall, maintained by the Althea Garden Club, add beauty to the park.
The Lamar Beautification Commission is always hard at work. Preservation projects to protect our precious buildings include the Mims House, where you can enjoy delicious home cooking and host an event.
Along the streets of Lamar, easily taken on foot, you will find churches, schools, grocers, businesses with deep roots in the community, historic homes, eateries, hair salons, petro stations and places to pop in and grab a necessity. Golf carts are a welcomed source of transportation for our little community.
Our town, with the help of dedicated residents, are currently constructing Unity Park. This park represents community unity, coming together and looking forward to town growth, development and engagement through civics! After all, we are the town with a big heart and an even bigger vision!
